A big gym? No, too dark, no windows and full of show-offs with their mobile phones taking selfies all the time!
Group exercise classes in the local leisure centre? A what – Insanity class? Just the name sends shivers down your spine!
You understand the benefits of physical activity, raising your heart rate, conditioning your heart and lungs, getting a little bit sweaty and red cheeked. However so many exercise options on offer seem to be too intense especially if you have some joint or muscle issues or other health conditions.
You might have overlooked one physical activity that is becoming more and more popular and offers so many benefits for people of different fitness levels, ages and backgrounds. Have you heard of Nordic Walking yet?
What is Nordic Walking?
Nordic Walking is a form of physical activity, where the active use of a pair of specifically designed Nordic Walking poles is added to regular natural walking.
If you can walk, you can Nordic Walk!
Technically correct use of poles integrates the activation of the upper body into the act of walking, to propel the body forward. The physical strain is distributed to various muscle groups of the whole body in a versatile, balanced and appropriate way.
The correct pole technique gives an opportunity to significantly intensify the process of walking by increasing the muscle work of the upper body.
Nordic Walking is a safe, natural, dynamic, efficient and suitable-for-all form of physical activity that trains the body in a holistic, symmetric and balanced way.
Nordic Walking is a very accessible activity and something that can be shared by people of different fitness levels. It is an ideal activity for people who have not exercised for a while or who dislike traditional sports or gym activities.
An injured person can, with the approval of their doctor or physiotherapist, use the poles to support and guide them, working to improve fitness as part of their rehabilitation.
People who are already active can use Nordic Walking for cross training.

What do I need in order to do Nordic Walking?
Special Nordic Walking poles of course! They are very distint from the trekking poles and have some key features that make it possible to execute the full technique. Attempting to Nordic Walk with a trekking pole is a bit like playing tennis with a badminton racket! Nordic Walking poles will be provided however if you wish to purchase your own poles and use them at your leisure that can be arranged as well.
It is recommended to Nordic Walk in walking shoes or trainers rather than walking boots. You want you shoes to include such features as good off-road grip, be waterproof, breathable, flexible fore-foot and cushioning in the heel. Layered clothing is also recommended with a waterproof outer for when it rains.
And that's about it! Not forgetting a water bottle!
